Overview of the Internal Medicine Department
The Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC) is a 150 bed tertiary care medical center located in Anchorage, Alaska. It serves the 130,000 Native Alaskan population located throughout the state. It is owned and managed by the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) as a not-for-profit medical center, whose mission is to provide the highest quality health care for Alaska Natives. ANMC has hospital based physician specialists in multiple disciplines, including general surgery, neurosurgery, internal medicine, urology cardiology, pulmonology, dermatology, neurology, endocrinology and intensivists for both pediatric and adult patients.
The Internal Medicine department has a number of unique features. There are 10 full-time hospitalist positions to cover the inpatient service, and to staff a consultative clinic on a rotating basis. The hospitalists carry an inpatient service which averages 10-12 patients per physician daily. In addition to staffing the medical ward and providing consultative coverage to the surgical services, the hospitalists work in an open ICU with support from several intensivists. In contrast to many settings, at ANMC the hospitalists participate in many procedures including central line placement, arterial line placement, paracentesis, thoracentesis, joint aspiration, and bone marrow examinations. In addition, the hospitalists perform diagnostic and therapeutic upper GI endoscopy – new hospitalists are mentored in these procedures on site. Besides the usual spectrum of medical illnesses, our patient population does have some unique illnesses including occasional cases of botulism and paralytic shellfish poisoning related to unique dietary factors.
The department of medicine includes a spectrum of ANMC based subspecialty services including rheumatology, dermatology, endocrinology, hepatology, cardiology and pulmonary/ critical care medicine. In addition, consultative services are available from the Anchorage community for gastroenterology and infectious diseases. The hospitalists also travel to Barrow, Alaska twice a year to staff a one-day consultative clinic.
