Originally from a rural area in Northeastern Pennsylvania, I joined the Navy at age 17 in 1984, two weeks after high school graduation. After serving for nearly seven years as an enlistee, I was honorably discharged and considered a career in nursing, per the suggestion of my husband. I moved to the Central Florida area and received training and employment as a certified nursing assistant. I then completed the LPN program in 1993. I earned my Associate Degree in Nursing in 1998 from Seminole Community College, and then went on to receive my Bachelors degree in Nursing Science from the University of Central Florida. During this succession of educational milestones, I worked in a variety of capacities; i.e. long term care, family practice, oncology and the medical/surgical, telemetry and intensive care areas at Volusia Medical Center, Orange City, Florida. I was then employed in the Emergency department in the Northern Virginia area for one year prior to moving to Dillingham, Alaska with my husband in July 2001, to work at the Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation. I intended to join the Public Health Service and did so February 4, 2002. I worked in the Specialty Clinic, Utilization Review and Inpatient units. I was also trained in the area of sexual assault and performed examinations where indicated. I completed a Masters of Science in Health Services while in Dillingham and also began a Masters Degree in Nursing Science as a Nurse practitioner from the University of Alaska. I moved to Anchorage and completed the degree while working at the Alaska Native Medical Center, Emergency Department. I successful passed the board examination as Certified Emergency Nurse. Now, as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, I am working in the Internal Medicine Department at ANMC. I am a member of the Commission Corp Readiness Force, the Commissioned Officer Association and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. |
